Mexico City Grand Prix: Qualifying team notes - Ferrari

NEWS STORY
31/10/2026

Scuderia Ferrari HP enjoyed its best Saturday of the season at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, securing its first pole position of the year thanks to Lewis Hamilton, who will start a Grand Prix ahead of the rest of the field for the very first time since joining the team.

Completing an excellent overall performance, Charles Leclerc was third, which means he will line up on the second row on a track where the slipstream often plays an important role along the approximately 800-metre run down to Turn 1. Today's was Lewis' 105th pole position, while for the Scuderia it is number 255. The Englishman also becomes the 35th Ferrari's driver to take pole position in a Grand Prix (he had previously secured two poles in the Sprint races in China in 2025 and Great Britain in 2026).

Lewis and Charles comfortably made it through Q1 on Soft tyres. In Q2, Leclerc progressed to the final phase using just one set of the softest compound, while Hamilton struggled to put together a good lap and decided to use a second set of Softs. In Q3, both drivers had two new sets of Soft tyres available. On their first attempts, Charles set a good 1'16"647, while Lewis posted a 1'17"069. After pitting for their second set of tyres, they headed back out and improved their times: Hamilton put together an almost perfect lap to bring his time down to 1'16"514, while Leclerc, despite making a mistake at Turn 10, managed to improve his time to 1'16"633, securing third place on the grid.

This evening, the team will work through all the possible scenarios in preparation for tomorrow's race, with the aim of turning its excellent qualifying performance into an equally strong result with both cars. Particular attention will be paid to the start and the strategy required to complete the race.

Lewis Hamilton: It's an incredibly special feeling to take my first pole position for Ferrari. I've been working towards a moment like this for a long time, so to finally achieve it means a lot. It hasn't been a straightforward weekend, with the running we missed and the issue we had yesterday, but we took important lessons from the last race, made good progress with the setup, and today we brought it all together when it mattered.

The margins are so fine, which makes this result all the more rewarding. A huge thank you to everyone at the track and back in Maranello. We can be proud of today, but of course, our focus now turns to tomorrow and converting this into a strong result for the team.

Charles Leclerc: I think there was a bit more in it today. On the out-laps, it was quite difficult to put the tyres in the right window, and this was our biggest challenge. There's such low grip with the downforce that we have here in Mexico City, that you've got to push the car to the limit in these conditions, which is quite fun. On my second run in Q3, I had a clean out-lap, but at the end, I just didn't put the lap together. Starting third here is not too bad, so we will give it all and see what we can bring home for the team.

Fred Vasseur: I am very happy for Lewis and for the whole team. His first pole position with Ferrari is an important milestone and a result that rewards all the work that has gone into it. This weekend, Lewis found the right balance between pushing and managing the tyres, and today it paid off.

Charles had a good first run in Q3 and then made a small mistake on his last attempt, but P3 is still a good place to start from here.

The most important part of the job, however, will be tomorrow. Both Lewis and Charles will be starting on the clean side and a lot will be about the race down to Turn 1, where the slipstream could play a big role. After the first lap, the key will be to try and be in clean air, as overheating in dirty air is an issue we all have to deal with. We now have to find the best strategy and execute a clean start, with both drivers working together as a team.
