Colapinto in plea to 'fans'

Alpine driver Franco Colapinto has taken to social media to urge his 'fans' to stop attacking rival drivers and even his own colleagues.

Almost from the day he entered F1 his followers have gained a reputation for using social media to attack anyone even perceived as being a threat to the Argentine driver, so much so the Alpine has had to appeal to them on a number of occasions calling on them to respect his rivals and cease the insults and threats.

Yet still they continue.

So now Colapinto has issued his own plea.

"I probably should have spoken to all of you sooner," he admits in an emotional video, "but this is something that needs to be addressed, something we need to change and improve.

"I will always be grateful, and I genuinely feel incredibly fortunate to have had you all supporting me from the very beginning," he continues. "I'm grateful for all the support you give me, for how you help me achieve results, and for how you constantly push me to aim higher.

"You help me and the team achieve our results, race after race, day after day, as we train and try to improve. And I'm genuinely grateful for all of that.

"I know it makes you incredibly proud when things go well for me, when I score points for myself and the team. And I have always been very grateful for that support.

"But sometimes, we go too far," he warns. "Instead of supporting me, we end up criticising people and attacking other drivers, other colleagues, my teammates, my mechanics, my engineers, people I work with every single day.

"I know you think you're defending me, but you're actually doing the opposite. You're not helping me or my future."

Of course, when the sport insists on using influencers and social media 'stars' in its incessant drive to increase its fanbase, it is only natural that some of those newly won fans will bring the very worst side of the medium with them.

At a time many fans are discussing the mystery of Charles Leclerc's brake 'issue' on Lap 47 of Sunday's Grand Prix, and the mysterious disappearance of his radio message just three second later, others are questioning another driver's religion, whether another is an absent father and the sexuality of a third.

One should be careful when using such mediums to encourage a new demographic, for you reap what you sow.
