Verstappen on pole in Singapore

NEWS STORY

This morning's Sprint hasn't only kept the teams busy, for the various incidents have seen the stewards continue working throughout the break, with no less eight currently under investigation.

No doubt one of the most significant is that involving Norris, who could well find himself with a grid penalty.

Russell was already due to start from the back of the grid, but there remains the question of whether his gearbox was damaged.

Spring winner has already said that the mini-GPs shouldn't be held on track such as this where overtaking is nigh impossible, which gives you some idea of his mindset heading into the hour.

Ferrari showed strong pace earlier, and will therefore be looking to make better use of this by qualifying higher than they did for the Sprint.

Courtesy of Russell's crash, Antonelli has been gifted a few more points, and while the Italian youngster can afford to take his foot off the gas we know that this is not in his nature, and despite appearing to have had an off weekend thus far, will be looking to give Verstappen a run for his money.

Despite showing promise yesterday, Gasly lost out earlier, while RB continues to pull away, and Haas and Audi look to build on their Sprint result.

Ahead of Q1, the air temperature is 30 degrees C, while the track temperature is 41 degrees.

In the Mercedes garage there is frantic activity around Russell's car, while in the adjacent garage it is a picture of serenity.

Hadjar is understood to have had an engine break over the break.

Green light, and Hulkenberg leads the way, followed by Colapinto, Gasly, Bottas and Alonso.

While most are on softs, the Audis are on mediums.

"Thank you boys," says Hadjar.

Oh dear, Ocon is in the barrier at Turn 13. Or rather he's not, just very, very close.

"I had no brakes," he reports as Stroll heads down the escape road at Turn 7.

Meanwhile, Alonso posts a benchmark 35.389.

Hadjar stops at Turn 8, but he too is able to continue.

Norris posts a 34.230, but Hamilton responds with a 33.311.

Piastri goes third, ahead of Sainz and Lawson as Hadjar clearly has an issue.

"The engine is off," reports the Frenchman as he grinds to a halt.

However, he gets going again, as Russell heads out.

Russell goes fourth, but is demoted by Antonelli and then Verstappen, who goes top with a 33.241.

"I smell something," reports Russell, "keep an eye on the brakes."

Norris goes top with a 33.047 as a 33.076 puts his teammate second.

Quickest in S1, Lawson goes sixth with a 33.765, teammate Lindblad goes tenth.

A 34.946 sees Stroll go tenth, as Hadjar now reports that he has no gears.

Russell goes eighth and Hulkenberg fifth.

Norris consolidates his top spot with a 32.775, however, quickest in the opening two sectors, Hamilton goes top with a 32.680.

Antonelli goes third with a 32.818 but then has his time deleted.

Yet to post a time, Hadjar is back in the pits.

Albon goes sixteenth with a 34.550 as his Williams teammate posts a 33.774 to go twelfth.

Leclerc improves to second, 0.094s off his teammate's pace.

Hadjar is out of his car, his session over.

Antonelli is told to be careful in respect of track limits.

Russell remains tenth as Gasly goes eighth.

Hulkenberg goes fifth with a 33.147 while a 33.261 puts Colapinto seventh.

Ocon goes fourteenth and Albon sixteenth.

Gasly goes seventh and Lindblad tenth, but both are demoted when Lawson goes fourth with a 32.885.

Hamilton consolidates his top spot with a 32.429.

Quickest is Hamilton, ahead of Leclerc, Norris, Lawson, Piastri, Hulkenberg, Gasly, Verstappen, Colapinto and Lindblad.

We lose Alonso, Albon, Stroll, Perez, Bottas and Hadjar, who suffered a gearbox issue.

Russell gets Q2 underway, the Briton followed by his teammate, Hullkenberg, Bortoleto, Norris and the Ferraris.

Russell crosses the line at 32.323 but Antonelli responds with a 32.165. Hulkenberg goes third with a 33.165, exactly a second down on Antonelli.

A 31.766 from Hamilton as Norris goes fourth, Piastri fifth and Leclerc sixth.

Verstappen stops the clock at 32.292 to go third, 0.526s off Hamilton's pace.

Gasly goes eleventh and Colapinto twelfth.

Bearman splits the Alpines with a 33.492.

Verstappen complains that his downshifts are insane as Sainz goes thirteenth with a 33.526.

Crossing the line at 31.895, Norris goes second, 0.129s down on Hamilton.

Phew! Onboard with Bortoleto is genuine heart in mouth stuff, the Brazilian pushing it to the limit... and then some.

Hulkenberg remains tenth as his teammate remains fifteenth.

Leclerc improves to fourth, but remains 0.416s off the pace.

Make that 0.653s off the pace, as Hamilton improves yet again.

Quickest in S1, Verstappen goes second with a 31.639, 0.110s off the pace.

As the clock counts down, Hulkenberg is clinging on to tenth.

Antonelli improves but remains fourth, as Gasly goes eighth, which is bad news for Hulkenberg.

Colapinto clouts the wall with his right-front but continues, as Lawson goes seventh and Lindblad ninth.

"I really lost it that corner, so much oversteer," complains Colapinto.

All of which drops Gasly to tenth.

Russell remains sixth.

Quickest is Hamilton, ahead of Verstappen, Norris, Leclerc, Antonelli, Russell, Piastri, Lawson, Lindblad and Gasly.

We lose Hulkenberg, Bearman, Ocon, Sainz, Bortoleto and Colapinto.
