A grid penalty for Colapinto

Franco Colapinto heads to Sepang with a 5-place grid penalty following the incident during today's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Following the restart, the Argentine approached his teammate from behind into Turn 1. He braked too late and entered the corner on the inside at a speed which did not allow him to make the corner in a controlled manner.

He overshot the corner and made contact with the left-hand side of Gasly, who then hit Norris and both cars retired.

The Stewards considered that Colapinto was wholly or predominantly to blame for the collision. Although the incident occurred at the first corner following the restart, there was no contribution from another driver which would justify applying the first-lap / first-corner more lenient approach.

The standard penalty for causing a collision is a 10-second time penalty. However, as Colapinto had retired from the race and was therefore unable to serve the time penalty, the stewards converted the penalty to a drop of 5 grid positions at the next race in which the Alpine driver participates, next weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

"Just sorry to all the team, not only to Pierre, it was a big mistake," said the Argentine. "Big sorry to Pierre, he has been working really hard in the factory. We lost a lot of positions and we were with both cars in the points.

"Very sad and disappointed," he added. "Big, big sorry, it's a big mistake. Cold brakes, cold tyres, I was completely out of control. Unfortunately, I also took Pierre out. And Lando of course. Big sorry to both of them."

Asked about his relationship with Gasly, who received abuse from his 'fans' following the Spanish Grand Prix, in which he appeared to hold him up, Colapinto said: "We are good. We've always been quite good together. Since we worked together for the first time, we got on very well. So we need to move on."

Meanwhile the stewards opted to take no further action following the incident involving Arvid Lindblad and his teammate, Liam Lawson.

Following the restart, Lindblad and Lawson approached Turn 1, with the British driver in a three-car situation.

Ahead of them, was the collision involving Colapinto, Gasly and Norris. That incident, together with Colapinto locking his brakes, triggered a braking reaction among the cars immediately ahead of Lindblad.

At the same time, Lindblad was positioned between cars on either side. During the corner, he made contact with Lawson.

Having reviewed the positioning and movement of the cars involved, the stewards determined that the contact was primarily the result of the restricted space available to Lindblad and the chain reaction caused by the incident ahead, rather than any action or error for which the driver could be considered wholly or predominantly to blame.

The stewards therefore considered this to be a typical first-corner incident following a restart, with no driver predominantly to blame.
