The longest periods of F1 dominance: Max Verstappen could top them all

NEWS STORY
05/03/2024

There have been many periods of complete domination in Formula One history which have seen drivers win numerous championships consecutively.

The drivers who managed such feats are genuine legends of the sport and at the time their successes were seen as rare and unlikely to be matched for a long time.

Here we will look at the greatest records of retained success in history, including Max Verstappen's which is expected to grow in the coming years.

Verstappen is on course for four-in-a-row victories

Verstappen is on a run of three-straight world championship victories and with Red Bull Racing's leading machinery he is thoroughly expected to make that four in 2024.

All of the major Canada sports betting sites offer the Dutchman as a massive favourite to win this year's Drivers' Championship.

Bookmaker bet365 for example offers him as short as 1/4 to join an exclusive group of four-time consecutive champions. This bet365 review illustrates that the sportsbook offers an extensive range of markets and bonuses that will be live across the expected season of Red Bull domination.

It would ultimately be a shock if the Dutch driver was to fail to extend his Championship winning streak this year and that narrative will surely remain for several years to come.

Verstappen will be backed by fans all over the globe to join the legendary trio of drivers who won four in a row in the past this year, and from there he could look to match the overall record in 2025.

The four-time consecutive winners

There are three legendary drivers whom Verstappen could match in securing a fourth straight championship this year.

Juan Manuel Fangio was the first to do so between 1954 and 1957 and he stood as the overall record holder until 2004.

The 2010s saw two iconic drivers who were long-term rivals each record four years of domination in Sebastien Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel opened up the decade with four season wins between 2010 and 2013 before his streak was ended by Hamilton in 2014. The Englishman went on to record his four-season stretch between 2017 and 2020 and was only deprived of a landmark fifth-straight success by Verstappen in 2021.

Sustaining championship title success for almost half a decade is a remarkable achievement in itself, however, one now-retired driver managed to go one better in winning five in a row.

Michael Schumacher - the five-straight champion

Michael Schumacher is the record holder with five straight wins to his name which means he has a sizeable cushion over Verstappen for now, but that could be taken away by the end of 2025.

The German opened the millennium with the greatest level of domination that F1 has ever seen as from 2000 to 2004 he retained the Drivers Championship title. Many long-term fans view Schumacher as the greatest ever due to this record, as well as his seven titles overall.

If Verstappen wants to establish himself as the most dominant driver of all time, and perhaps the single greatest-ever individual in the history of the sport, then Schumacher is the man with the records to beat.
