The Excitement of the Mexican Grand Prix: Bookmakers' Expectations Unveiled

NEWS STORY
26/10/2023

The Mexican Grand Prix has long been a mainstay of the F1 calendar, providing drama, excitement, and unpredictability.

This year, however, there seems to be a sense of certainty overshadowing the event. The 2023 Mexican Grand Prix, also known as the Mexico City Grand Prix, is set to be another spectacle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez this Sunday, 29 October. UK betting sites have been quick to set the odds, and to the surprise of few, Max Verstappen is the overwhelming favorite. If you've been following the F1 season, this should hardly be groundbreaking news.

Verstappen has been an absolute juggernaut this season, locking in the F1 Drivers' Championship for the third consecutive year. The man is also no stranger to success in Mexico, having clinched four of the last five races held at the venue. Lewis Hamilton managed to interrupt this winning streak in 2019, but it seems unlikely to happen again, given Verstappen's current form. After all, the 26-year-old has won 13 of his last 14 races, clearly setting the pace for the rest of the grid.

Reading the Numbers

The odds for Verstappen sit at a staggering -400 to -350, emphasizing the bookies' confidence in yet another win for the Dutchman. His teammate, Sergio Perez, is second in line with odds ranging from +700 to +750. While Perez has had a remarkable season, he hasn't been on the podium for the last four races. Despite these recent performances, he's still second in the Drivers' Championship standings because, for the most part, he's been quite good.

However, Hamilton, with odds ranging between +1,000 and +1,200, is not to be completely counted out. The seven-time World Champion might have lost a step or two, yet he's still shown his ability to navigate the circuit skillfully, finishing second in Mexico City in each of the last two years. His most recent disqualification at the US Grand Prix could either break him or serve as a much-needed wake-up call.

The Underdogs and Long Shots

Moving down the list, Lando Norris and George Russell are also in the mix, albeit with longer odds. Norris carries odds of +1,600 to +1,800, while Russell sits at +2,800 to +2,200. Both drivers have shown glimpses of brilliance this season, however, neither has consistently managed to challenge the leading pack. Other drivers with long odds include the likes of Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, and Carlos Sainz, suggesting that the bookmakers don't anticipate any dark-horse surprises from these racers.

Additionally, the odds for some of the more seasoned drivers such as Fernando Alonso or Pierre Gasly are significantly longer, extending to +8,000 and +20,000 respectively. This means you'd need a significant amount of luck and perhaps a sprinkling of race-day chaos for these veterans to land a victory.

What's Next?

The nature of sports betting involves continuous updates based on a variety of factors such as track conditions, qualifying results, and real-time events. So while these odds are accurate as of October 23, 2023, they can fluctuate wildly in the days leading up to the race. Keep your eyes peeled for adjustments as new information becomes available.

So there we have it, the bookmakers have laid down their expectations for the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix. While the numbers heavily favor Verstappen, there are still elements of unpredictability that make F1 racing a spectacle to behold. Factors such as weather, mechanical issues, and driver errors can turn the tables in an instant. Therefore, while the odds may be stacked in favor of certain racers, the beautiful unpredictability of sports means anything could happen come race day. Stay tuned.
