Button eyes Super GT

NEWS STORY
14/09/2016

Jenson Button, who is to take a year out of F1 next season as McLaren begins an "innovative three-driver strategy" which could yet see him back in the cockpit, has admitted that he could race in another series.

The Briton, who is at pains to dismiss the McLaren strategy effectively means his retirement from F1, speaking at a promotional event in Singapore ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix, said that he is looking at various ways of filling his time next season.

"I want to spend more time with friends, family and to do other things," he said. "I love triathlons and maybe I'll race in something else like Rallycross or Super GT in Japan."

While his father John was a rallycross driver, Button has a long involvement with Honda, which not only partners McLaren in F1 but also makes the NSX-GT, the staple of Super GT.

"There are so many options and that's why it's exciting," he continued, "because I can sort of live my life the way I want to next year.

"I have a contract to race with the team in 2018 if the team wants me to race," he added, "and if I feel that I want to race. I've been driving in Formula One for 17 years, which is my whole adult life, so I want to live a year in my life that is not by its schedule."

Then there's the Blancpain series or even Bathurst, having sampled the legendary track in an F1 car a few years back.
