Rain to further 'spice up' qualifying?

NEWS STORY
15/03/2016

As if drivers, teams, fans and commentators don't have enough to handle on Saturday, as a controversial new qualifying format is introduced, it looks likely that rain showers will add to the fun and games.

UBIMET, which provides meteorological services to the FIA, forecasts that on Friday morning a cold front is expected with strong, possibly thundery showers. From noon there will be partly cloudy skies with a few showers.

Both sessions might take place under wet conditions, adds the Vienna-based company. A strong southwest wind will prevail and temperatures should reach about 18 degrees.

On Saturday a mix of sun and clouds is expected, with a growing chance of showers in the afternoon. Indeed, the shower risk will rise to 30 - 40 percent during qualifying, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 19 degrees.

As of today (Tuesday), the race on Sunday is expected to take place in dry conditions with temperatures reaching 21 degrees.

"Holding my breath for the full-on excitement of the last lap in Q3 when only 2 cars, perhaps a minute apart on the track, battle for pole. Not.

No chance of other drivers improving their grid position. And every chance of hearing complete silence if those 2 cars are not near enough to be heard.

I don't see how this qualifying format survives its first use. The mind boggles it even gets used for a first time. Well, if there really is a first time for everything, it stands to reason that there's a last time too. "

"A while ago, wasn't there some talk of spraying water on the track to spice things up?"
