Vettel defends Halo device

NEWS STORY
04/03/2016

In the wake of criticism of the device by the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel has given the Halo a thumbs-up.

Following yesterday's first public sighting of an example of the device on Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, this morning Vettel got his first on-track experience of the device.

In the wake of Lewis Hamilton's Instagram post, in which the Briton labelled the device "the worst looking mod in Formula One history", urging the sport "please no!", Vettel insisted that the aesthetics should be ignored, and that we should concentrate on the positives.

"First of all, to go around is okay," the German told reporters, during the lunch break. "You can see what you need to see.

"I think we can improve the system in terms of aesthetics," he continued, "and also in terms of how much it's in your way, but I tested it as well in the simulator and I think we will see evolutions of it very soon.

"In principle I agree it doesn't look very nice," he admitted,. "but equally it helps increase the safety, it helps save lives. There would be at least two drivers in the last four years that I remember that would still be around, Henry Surtees and Justin Wilson, if we had this type of system.

"I think it can be very ugly," he concluded, "but nothing justifies not having these two guys around."

"How about the drivers that will be killed as a result of not being able to get them out of the car quick enough in the case of fire or a medical emergency because of this monstrosity? Or how about the device killing drivers when a device breaks in a heavy impact and it potentially impales the driver's head? Remember Senna killed by a piece of the car which wasn't supposed to break?
Did F1 lose all common sense?

"Could this device push away a very heavy tractor like the one that practically killed Jules Bianchi in Japan?
