Bahrain: GP2 Asia sessions postponed as situation worsens

NEWS STORY
17/02/2011

GP2 Asia organizers have decided to postpone today's activity at the Bahrain International Circuit as three more people are killed in clashes between protestors and the police.

A brief statement issued by GP2 Asia officials this morning read:

"The second round of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series was to open today at Bahrain International Circuit with practice session starting at 11am local time. However, due to the current local events, the medical staff normally stationed at the circuit has been temporary called to the city's hospitals in case of an emergency.

For obvious safety reasons, the GP2 Series organisers have decided to postpone today's track activity until tomorrow.

In Manama, the security forces were battling with several thousand anti-government protestors, with riot police initially using tear gas and batons.

Subsequent reports claim that tanks were brought into action to quell the protestors who are seeking a wide range of social reforms as similar unrests sweeps the region.

It is understood that in this latest outbreak, at least three protestors have been killed.
