Veteran Walker turns out for a worthy cause

Murray Walker has added his unique style of commentary to a celebrity 'Call My Wine Bluff' event in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Walker was joined on the panel by news presenters Emma Crosby and Katie Razzall, in addition to Katie's husband, Mistresses actor Oliver Milburn, at the event, organised as part of the Brawn Lifeboat Challenge.

Ten teams from the UK's leading companies, including a team from John Lewis who took charge of the event, are competing to raise the money required to fund a new RNLI lifeboat on the River Thames, which the charity has been patrolling since 2002.

Intermixing tales of the racing podium with the qualities of a pinot noir, it was a less than easy task for the guests to decide whether Murray, or the other celebrities who also added their own unique spin, were bluffing their way through their knowledge of the burgundy's and other fine wines on offer.

The evening included a river demonstration by the crew from RNLI Tower lifeboat station, the busiest of the 235 RNLI lifeboat stations strategically placed around the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Tower lifeboat station will be one of the RNLI's Thames stations to benefit from the new lifeboat that The Brawn Lifeboat Challenge aims to purchase.

RNLI volunteer crewmember, Bill Callaghan, who spoke at the event about the work of the RNLI, said: 'The current RNLI lifeboats that provide search and rescue cover on the River Thames are nearing the end of their working life and need to be replaced. The new boat will be a faster boat which means we can get to casualties quicker in situations where the seconds really do count.

"Unfortunately, the boats are an expensive piece of kit so we are incredibly grateful that the team from John Lewis, along with the other teams undertaking The Brawn Lifeboat Challenge, are putting every effort into raising the funds necessary to buy the new lifeboat, which will assist us in continuing to save lives on the River Thames.'

The event raised £10,000 towards the cost of the new lifeboat, which will be named after the challenge headed up by Ross Brawn.
