Vettel: If anyone can, Schumacher can

Speaking in the German press, Sebastian Vettel has thrown his support behind compatriot Michael Schumacher. Following a glittering career which netted a record seven world championship titles, Schumacher's return to the sport has been less than glowing, fuelling speculation in some quarters that he may not see the season out, let alone return for 2011.

"It's far from easy to return after a three year break," Vettel said in an interview with Der Spiegel. "The cars have changed, the tyres as well. Many things are not the way that he had become accustomed to."

Lewis Hamilton recently joined the growing chorus of concern over Schumacher's pace, suggesting that the 41-year-old doesn't have the hunger to keep up with the "youngsters". Even former boss Eddie Jordan has waded into the debate, claiming his former driver had made a "huge error" returning to Formula One.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone disagrees. "I don't think it was a mistake for him to come back," he said. "He is obviously fit, motivated and talented. The car hasn't been up to Michael." Knowing what a competitor Schumacher is, Ecclestone claimed he wouldn't be surprised if Schumacher stopped racing if his performances weren't up to scratch.

Vettel remains convinced that if anyone can rekindle the type of racing winning form he once had it is the man from Kerpen. "If anyone can do it, it is him," says the Red Bull driver. "When I look at his face and read his body language, I do not see any confusion or panic."
