Malaysia returns to victory venue

A1 Team Malaysia heads to Mexico this week for the eighth round of this season's A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. The team took victory in the Sprint race at this venue last year with Alex Yoong driving and he returns to the driving seat aiming to repeat this success. Aaron Lim (right) will also be driving the Malaysian car, taking part in the Friday morning rookie sessions and helping the team to prepare the car for the weekend.

The Series will once again race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, named after Mexico's most famous motor racing sons, Ricardo and Pedro Rodriguez, a circuit which was introduced into A1GP last season.

23-year-old Lim joined the team at this event last season and made his debut in the Mexico City rookie session. With Fairuz Fauzy eligible to use this session at the previous two rounds, Lim has been out of the car since December and is looking forward to his return. He says, "I've missed driving the A1GP car as I enjoy it so much, but it's been good for the team to have a driver that is able to do all the sessions in a weekend. It's appropriate that I'm getting back in the car in Mexico, as that is where I had my A1GP event debut. I can remember how nervous I was then. The adrenalin pumps every time I go out in the car, but now it's the anticipation and the thrill of being out there with all the other cars, concentrating on the car that brings the excitement."

Yoong will be returning to the cockpit after a two round break and his aim is to be on the pace as quickly as possible. He previews the weekend ahead saying, "I'm pleased to be getting back in the Malaysia car and it's good that it's at this venue where we had our third win of last season. I love the circuit as it's a real mix of styles. It flows well, there's the tight sequence of corners and the very special Peraltada, as well as the long front straight and all in a high-altitude location which adds to the physical challenge. The cars are a little slower here because of the altitude, but it's still one of the most exciting venues we visit."

Jack Cunningham, Chief Executive of the team adds, "We're fortunate to have a strong driver pairing who are both front running racers in A1GP, with the experience and maturity to share the drive during the course of the season as shown by Fairuz's finishes at the Durban event. I'm sure Alex will return to the car with renewed vigour and determination, particularly at this track which brought us one of our best results last season."

The infamous Peraltada corner, which is lined by a concrete wall on the outside and has no run-off area, has been modified slightly this year with the addition an extra chicane on the entry to the extremely fast final corner, providing a braking zone and potential overtaking opportunity. This is the only change to the circuit configuration for the A1GP Series.

A1 Team Malaysia captured fifth place in the Feature race and ninth position in the Sprint race at The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, Durban, South Africa, three weeks ago. Fauzy and the Malaysian team survived two action packed races which were full of crashes to record the team's best performance of the season so far.
