NEWS STORY
04/02/2008

Motor sport fans who are expected to pack out the grandstands and general admission areas of the Durban street circuit that will host the seventh round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport on February 22, 23 and 24 can look forward to a full and exciting programme of events.

In addition to the two official practice sessions for the A1GP Durban on Friday (February 22), Saturday's third practice and official qualifying and Sunday's Sprint and Feature races, there will be practice, qualifying and two races each (one on Saturday and one on Sunday) for the Shelby CanAm sports car series and a GT Challenge. There will also be parades of Supercars and Ferraris on Saturday and Sunday and a 30-minute A1GP pit walkabout on each of the three days.

Friday's action starts from 0900 with John Watson's demonstration laps of the circuit in the A1GP car and the first of three free practice sessions for GT Challenge entries before the first official practice session for the A1GP rookie drivers and developing nations from 1100 to 1200. This will be followed by an A1GP pit walkabout at 1215 and free practices for Shelby CanAm and GT Challenge before the second official A1GP practice session from 1400 to 1500.

The final practice sessions for the supporting races will take place after the second A1GP practice.

Saturday morning features first qualifying for the support categories before the third official A1GP practice from 1100 to 1200 and the first GT Challenge race at 1215. There will be a second A1GP pit walkabout at 1220 and a Ferrari parade at 1250. The first Shelby Can Am race will precede the unique and very exciting four-part A1GP qualifying session that starts at 1415 and finishes at 1530. This will be followed by the second GT Challenge qualifying session and a parade of Supercars.

Sunday morning's programme starts with a Supercar parade at 0900, followed by the second Shelby CanAm qualifying session. The A1GP Sprint race, which features a rolling start, gets underway at 1100 and ends at 1120. Then there are the second races for the GT Challenge and Shelby CanAm, another Ferrari parade and an A1GP pit walkabout at 1315.

The opening ceremony for A1GP is at 1325 and the A1GP Feature race, with two compulsory pit stops to change tyres, starts at 1500 and finishes at 1610. There is a podium ceremony immediately after the Feature race and the day's activities end with a final parade of Supercars.

There will be eight giant screens around the precinct offering the majority of spectators more to watch than just the immediate trackside action in front of them. The nearby SunCoast Casino complex is open to the public and offers air conditioned comfort, restaurants and rest rooms throughout the three days.
