GP2 heads to Valencia for showdown

NEWS STORY
27/09/2007

Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen. Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet Jr. To the list of great GP2 Series rivalries, add Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi.

As in 2005 and 2006, the two stand out drivers of 2007 arrive at the final race meeting of the season with the championship theirs for the taking. The pretenders to the throne will battle it out this weekend on the tight and unforgiving confines of Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia where one simple mistake could mean the difference between lifting the title and finishing in a heart-breaking second position. No pressure then...

So who will it be? Timo (right) or Lucas (left)? Split by just two points as they arrive in Spain, the answer is that either driver could lift the title. And, to be fair, either one would deserve to be crowned champion. Both have approached the 2007 season with very different methods. While one has lived his season by the sword, the other has been the quiet man, plugging away and racking up consistent results. But with just 20 points left for which to play, tactics and season strategies will be left to one side. It's an out and out fight for glory.

The same goes for the team championship. With iSport International leading on 109 points, ART Grand Prix sits just 22 behind on 87. With a total of 33 points on offer for a single team, it is still possible for the French squad to add a third consecutive title to their trophy shelves.

The battles for third in the championships will also be decided this weekend. Luca Filippi is aiming to cling onto his position, but will have stiff opposition from countryman Giorgio Pantano, while in the team's championship Super Nova International and Campos Grand Prix know that they could both still snatch second in the final tables from ART Grand Prix.

In short, GP2 arrives at the final race with the championship battles more finely poised than in any season in the series' history.
