Front wing is within regulations says Dennis

For as long as F1 continues to rely on aerodynamic grip, as opposed to mechanical, in the search for that extra fraction of a second, the aero boffins will continue to push the envelope, or in some cases bend it, literally.

In recent years we've had flexing front wings, rear wings, bargeboards and floors, as the teams look for that all-important advantage, and while one team might attempt to bend the rules, its rivals - who are usually up their ears (wings) in their own skulduggery - do everything to catch them out.

Since McLaren introduced its unique front wing at the recent tests in Spain there has been talk that it flouts the rules, and over the course of the first two days of the Grand Prix weekend Pitpass has been sent at least two 'movies' which 'prove' the Woking team is cheating.

Speaking to reporters in Barcelona however, Ron Dennis dismissed speculation that his team's controversial new wing contravenes the rules.

"Because it is measured, the whole front wing structure moves an extremely small amount," said the Englishman. "It does have a degree of vertical compliance but that is 'feathering'.

This aeroelasticity has been exploited by other teams and is designed to reduce the drag, but what you are seeing is a degree of deflection coming from the load. It is a very small amount and it is very stiff.

"You would all feel comfortable if you went and put your hand on it and gave it a good push," he added, a hint of a grin spreading across his face. "No team has voiced any opinion and the FIA considers the whole thing well within the regulations."
