Cosworth's hopes dashed

NEWS STORY
19/10/2006

It would seem that Michael Schumacher's is not the only distinguished career that will come to an end this weekend.

Other than Michelin, which is withdrawing from F1, yesterday's confirmation from the World Motor Sport Council that Ferrari will supply two teams in 2007 - Spyker and one of the Red Bull GmbH owned teams - ends any (faint) hope of the engine manufacturer remaining in the sport, and thereby marking the 40th anniversary of its debut next June.

There had been a hope that the legendary engine manufacturer - which won its maiden race at Zandvoort in 1967, with Jim Clark taking his Lotus Ford to victory - might remain in F1 in 2007, due to the ruling that engine manufacturers may only supply one team. However, yesterday's announcement that the WMSC has accepted a request from Ferrari to supply two teams appears to bring an end to the Cosworth-F1 story.

While media attention focuses on seven-time World Champion Schumacher this weekend, it will be interesting to note how much coverage is given to the engine manufacturer which helped numerous drivers to 10 Drivers' Championships and 13 Constructors' Championships, and was, for so many years, the mainstay of Formula One.

A sad day for the sport.
