F1 avoids outright clash with World Cup

NEWS STORY
18/06/2006

In all honesty, it is hard for Formula One to get a look in at the moment, as the World Cup dominates TV screens, radio, newspapers and the Internet.

Although a couple of races, and indeed individual sessions have been rescheduled in an attempt to prevent a head-on clash, sports fans will find their loyalties sorely tested over the next couple of weeks, whilst hoping that their (local) broadcaster doesn't forget F1's existence.

Following the first round of matches, both the Canadian and United States Grands Prix clash with the World Cup, the Montreal event taking place over the same weekend as the second phase of the championship and qualifying at Indianapolis on the same day as two of the Quarter-final games.

Thankfully, the clashes are not entirely head-on, with qualifying for the Canadian GP due to end almost an hour before Match 50, which features the winner of Group C versus the runner up from Group D, gets underway.

The Canadian Grand should end, barring adverse weather conditions, in time for the start of Match 52, which features the winner of Group D versus the runner up from Group C.

There is no football on the day of the United States Grand Prix, however qualifying should end in time for coverage of the Quarter-Final (Match 60) to begin.

The tournament ends in Berlin on 9 July, one week before the French Grand Prix.
