NEWS STORY
09/06/2006

Ahead of today's second free practice session the air temperature is 28 degrees C, while the track temperature is 45 degrees. Conditions remain ideal.

The lights go green and first out is Kubica, followed by Davidson, Doornbos, Sato, Montagny, Jani, Yamamoto, Mondini and Monteiro.

Doornbos posts the first time of the session, crossing the line at 1:26.017, moments later, however, Davidson goes 2.1s quicker, posting a 1:23.848.

Doornbos improves with a 25.578, to remain second, ahead of Mondini, Monteiro and Albers. Seven minutes into the session, Ralf is the first of the 'big guns' to go out, followed by Massa.

As Jarno Trulli leaves the pits, teammate Ralf goes second, crossing the line at 1:25.006. However, moments later the German is leapfrogged by Massa who posts 1:24.740.

The Brazilian's moment is short-lived however, as Wurz and Ralf both improve. Massa isn't finished however, and posts a 1:23.933 to re-take second spot, immediately going quickest in the first sector on his next lap.

Wurz posts 23.786 to go quickest, however, Massa goes even quicker, crossing the line at 1:23.553 to take the top spot for the first time this afternoon. Kubica has other ideas though, the Pole posting 1:22.636, that's 0.917s faster than the Ferrari.

Elsewhere, as Speed, Michael and Klien leave the pits, Rosberg goes fifth (24.026).

There's a massive cloud of dust as Jani goes off, however he is able to continue.

Rosberg improves to fourth, but is demoted moments later as Michael goes third with a 1:23.641.

Coulthard, Button, Webber and Alonso are all on track as Michael posts 23.443, thereby moving up to second.

Klien has a big spin as Webber goes fifth, ahead of Trulli, Button and Ralf. However, moments later the Australian improves to second with a 1:23.099.

Alonso begins a hot lap, his first of the day. At the first split he's 0.025s up on Kubica, improving to 0.119s by the second split. However, his final sector is poor, consequently he can only manage 1:26.612, which puts him twentieth.

Next time around he's quickest at the first split, finally going on to post 1:22.858, which puts him second, ahead of Webber, Michael, Massa and Button.

Barrichello is currently eleventh, 0.7s down on his teammate. Next time around the Brazilian improves to tenth.

A 1:22.294 sees Giancarlo Fisichella go quickest, posting a 1:22.294, giving Renault a 1-3.

Jacques Villeneuve goes ninth with a 1:23.750, as his teammate, Nick Heidfeld, waits resolutely in his garage, having only completed one installation lap today.

Robert Kubica goes quickest in the first sector, then posts a personal best in the second, finally crossing the line at 1:22.243, to re-take the top spot from Fisichella.

Davidson has completed the most laps thus far (20), and remains fourth, 0.830s down on Kubica.

Massa has a big moment as the Ferrari gets all out of shape. The Brazilian heads straight back to the pits.

Surprisingly, both McLarens are off the pace, Montoya is ninth (23.652), while Kimi is sixteenth (23.915).

As Coulthard returns to the pits, having failed to improve on nineteenth, Michael Schumacher takes to the track, hoping to close the gap to Kubica and Fisichella. Meanwhile, Barrichello goes sixth with a 1:23.104.

Having improved to tenth, albeit 1.464s off Kubica's pace, Button returns to the pits.

Massa goes quickest in the first sector, but moments later his teammate goes even quicker. The Brazilian improves to fourth (22.476), while Michael opts to abort his lap and return to the pits.

In the midst of all the excitement (!), Trulli has slipped into third, just 0.194s down on Kubica. Massa remains fourth,, ahead of Alonso, Davidson, Webber and Barrichello.

Kubica clearly has more in reserve, the BMW test driver goes quickest in the first sector. He posts a personal best in the second and finally crosses the line at 1:21.651, having gone quickest in the final sector. The Pole consolidates his place at the top of the timesheets.

As Ralf goes ninth (23.114), Michael slides a little further down the timesheets into tenth. Moments later the German is nudged down to eleventh by Montoya.
