Cosworth team effort sees Series 12 make it to Indy

Following the news that Red Bull will run the latest Cosworth engine at Indianapolis this weekend, TJ2005 Series 12, which has an increase of 30 bhp & 700 rpm on its predecessor, the engine manufacturer's Head of F1 Development, Alex Hitzinger, told Pitpass of the team effort that went on behind the scenes.

"Overall it was a very demanding project, because the time we had available for this project was very short," the German revealed. "We basically had only four months to develop the spec and get it ready for introduction.

"Because it is a big performance and engine speed increase, many components required a redesign, to be able to cope with the increased loads. Some of these components are on long manufacturing lead-times, which cuts the effective development time very short.

"On top of that, the complete inlet and exhaust system has been redesigned to optimise the engine for higher engine speeds," he added.

"Everybody in our team and also our suppliers have put a tremendous effort into this project, which included working evenings and weekends, to deliver this upgrade on time and meet all the targets."
