With BAR opting to run at Silverstone, and Toyota already scheduled to run at the Northamptonshire track, only Ferrari and Sauber were present at the Autodromo Nazionale, Monza, on Thursday.

The Spaniard continued with a programme centred on Bridgestone tyre development and aerodynamics for the forthcoming races.

"Felipe ran the scheduled medium downforce programme in preparation for the forthcoming two North American races," explained Jacky Eeckelaert, Sauber's chief race engineer, "whereby the focus was on the United States Grand Prix. He used particularly the morning to set the car up according to his driving style. Later he assessed several Michelin tyres for Indianapolis to enable us to make a first decision this evening.

"On Friday he will verify the gathered aerodynamic data for us, but will also further work with Michelin on the tyre selection for Indianapolis."
