Teams to meet with GPWC today

NEWS STORY
16/02/2005

Representatives of nine Formula One teams will meet with the organizers of the Grand Prix World Championship (GPWC) today, as the team behind the proposed series attempts to sell itself.

On offer is a bigger slice of the revenue generated by the sport, together with a whole host of other goodies, designed to pull the teams out of Bernie Ecclestone's clutches.

Despite being one of the 'founding fathers' of the GPWC, Ferrari has already agreed to stick with Bernie, a move which many believed would sound the death knell for the breakaway series. However, Toyota and Honda have both now expressed an interest.

As the GPWC prepares to entice the teams with its offer, Bernie Ecclestone has laid out an equally tasty treat, the offer of ready cash, and lots of it.

Although the teams are "huffing and puffing", as Max Mosley would say, it is widely believed that one or two of them will eventually break rank. It appears to be only a matter of time.

"The teams will be presented with a structure that shows what the sport could be like if you don't have commercial control by three banks and a family trust," a Grand Prix World Championship spokesman told Reuters.

Sadly, the deciding factor is unlikely to be the rules stability that the GPWC is offering, nor the new sporting framework, the open governance or the exciting racing, but the amount of cash that is laid on the table, and how quickly those involved can scoop it up.

Expect many positive comments following the meeting, but little else.
