Williams fearful of another red-wash

As the teams prepare for a hectic testing schedule, ahead of the busiest season in Formula One history, team boss Frank Williams has admitted that he fears another Ferrari red-wash this season.

Despite the fact that ahead of the 2004 season the opposition had appeared to have narrowed the gap, if not drawn level, with the Italian team., in Melbourne it was clear that the world champions were stronger than ever - and still using their 2003 car.

The red cars dominated the season, other than on a couple of occasions, when Renault, McLaren and WilliamsF1 gladly stole the scraps from the table. The only team that consistently shadowed the red car, albeit from a safe distance, was BAR.

Speaking at the unveiling of his team's new livery, and following the signing of the Royal Bank of Scotland as a sponsor, Williams admitted that he is concerned that once again, Ferrari will lead the way.

"It's a fantastic team, they almost never make a mistake," he said, according to Reuters. "What worries me deeply is Ferrari's announcing not that long ago, that 'we'll make a new car for April again'.

"They have obviously, I'd imagine, travelled along the path we've all travelled along with the new aerodynamic rules and said we need to be clever and more inventive than this," he continued. "I'm just worried that they may have thought of something very, very clever and thought it's worth having a fresh start to get the best out of this. I hope I'm wrong."

The Italian team is continuing its trend of recent years, by beginning the season with its old car, even though the rules have been quite severely changed. It's understood that the F2005 will make its race debut at San Marino.
