5-year deal for Silverstone

NEWS STORY
09/12/2004

At long last, the Silverstone saga appears to be at an end, at least for now.

It's understood that the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) and Bernie Ecclestone have agreed a deal that will see the British round of the formula One world Championship continue until 2009.

One of the first to welcome the news, and a key player in the negotiations, was Sports Minister Richard Caborn. "This is a great day for the future of the motor industry in the UK," he said. "We have been working with the East Midlands Development Agency and the local authority to develop this industrial cluster at Silverstone.

"This should not only secure the long-term future of the all the teams operating out of the UK but will give the opportunity for others to join," he added. "This is consistent with the Government's policy of developing world-beating centres of excellence for manufacturing."
