Pirelli confirms Canada tyre compounds

NEWS STORY
27/02/2016

Pirelli has confirmed that its new ultrasoft compound will be one of the mandatory tyre choices in Canada.

Under the new 2016 tyre regulations, choices for long-haul events have to be made 14 weeks in advance, whereas for European races the deadline is eight weeks in advance.

Consequently, when Pirelli revealed that the new ultrasoft compound would be one of the mandatory tyres in Montreal, some jumped the gun and claimed this would be the new compound's debut. In fact, the new purple-banded tyres will make their race weekend debut two weeks earlier in Monaco.

Pirelli will also take the soft and supersoft to Montreal, the yellow-banded soft compound being the mandatory tyres available for the race.

Each driver must have two sets of the softs available for the race, and must use at least one of them.

In terms of qualifying, each driver must save for one set of ultrasofts for Q3 which will be given back by those who qualify in the top 10, while those who don't make it into the top ten drivers will keep theirs for the race.

The teams are free to choose the remaining sets; making up 13 sets in total for the weekend.
