Button talks about holiday robbery

Jenson Button has revealed further details about his burglary ordeal whilst on holiday in St Tropez.

Following initial reports that the McLaren driver and his wife Jessica had been "gassed" during the robbery - a common modus operandi for such crimes in the region - Button now believes that not to be the case.

"It was strange no one woke up but one of the officers we spoke to said it could be that we were gassed, so that is where that came from," he told reporters at Spa today. "It doesn't matter either way to us what happened, someone burgled our house when we were in it and whether we were gassed or not doesn't matter. We are all here safe and well, that is the important thing but it is amazing that we didn't realise it was happening.

"I woke up and the drawer next to the bed was open and I thought immediately that was strange," he revealed. "I woke up early because I was going cycling for training. The bedroom door was open and I always close it and then I noticed the outside doors were open and stuff was everywhere. I heard a lot of people have been affected this summer down there.

"It is not nice to know that there was someone in your room going through your drawers just centimetres away from your wife's head," he added. "That is the horrible bit.

"You can replace money and jewellery," he continued, "it obviously hurts because of the sentimental value of things like the engagement ring. That is all replaceable but our health isn't."

Having confirmed that he will be "beefing up" his, and his wife's, personal security, the Briton, who was lucky to escape unscathed from a hold-up in 2010, when his car was attacked by armed criminals in Brazil, also admitted that he will be more careful in future when taking to social media.

"You are obviously going to be more cautious," he said. "I had the issue in Brazil as well. You do worry so we have taken certain measures so that we feel more secure. Social networking always brings up this issue and we don't do social networking unless we are at home in Monaco now."
