Caterham administrator still in hope

NEWS STORY

As the first of the teams announces its launch date, the joint administrator for Caterham says that the fight to save the team continues.

Earlier today, Force India became the first team to officially confirm the launch date of its 2015 contender. And as rivals prepare to put the finishing touches to their cars, the joint administrator for Caterham admits that as talks continue to save the team, there is uncertainty as to whether it will attend the opening test, far less announce a launch date.

"Talks with interested parties continue, but if a buyer is not found before the test, we will not put up the money to go," Henry Shinners of Smith & Williamson has told BBC Sport.

"I wouldn't rule anything out," he continued, "but if we reach the first race in the same position, the chances of saving the team are virtually nil."

Of course, launches are not that important and more often than not the car unveiled to the media to the accompaniment of pulsating rock music, dry ice and a light show, bears no resemblance to the car that takes to the track just a few days later. Indeed, last year most cars were unveiled an hour or so before they were put through their paces.

Nonetheless, the race to find investors for the beleaguered team is very much on and the clock is ticking.

We need to start moving in the next few weeks if a deal is going to get over the line," admitted Shinners.

Although in administration, the team was able to attend the season finale in Abu Dhabi following a successful crowd funding project which raised the required finances. However, despite claims in December that there were as many as three potential buyers nothing has been heard since. Indeed, talking to the Press Association, administrator Finbarr O'Connell described the process as "annoyingly slow".

"We are in talks with a few people who have the wherewithal if they decided to go ahead," he said. "But it's a tough investment decision. Formula One is so expensive and there is not a line of people queueing to get in. There are only a very limited number of parties who can afford to get into it. One of those interested is a billionaire who would come into F1 for himself and to promote his products, whilst the other two are in the automotive industry.

"If you are spending £100million you are not going to buy it and rush in at the end and do a half-baked season for 2015," he admitted. "People who are spending that amount of money per season want to do it completely properly. However, there is only now a small window of time to do 2015 as well as it can be done. My view is we have this month and that's it. It might slip into next month, but only if final details are being resolved."
