Whiting inspects Mexico City track

The FIA's Charlie Whiting has visited the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit at which it is hoped the country's round of the 2014 season will be held.

The circuit, formerly known as the Magdalena Mixhuca Circuit, is located in a sports park built on a lake bed, and has hosted 15 Grands Prix between 1963 and 1992.

While a provisional date has been given for the event (November 9), it is recognised that a serious amount of work will have to be done in order to bring the track and its facilities up to contemporary standards. While some doubt whether the work can be carried out in time, the project has the backing of Carlos Slim, the world's richest man.

Whiting was accompanied by Tavo Hellmund, the original driving force behind the project which saw the construction of the Circuit of the Americas and the return of F1 to America. Hellmund's father Gustavo, was promoter at the Mexico City venue.

As well as Hellmund, Whiting was accompanied by FIA vice president Jose Abed, who was previously head of the event's organizing committee and a representative of Tilke GmbH which has responsibility for carrying out the relevant upgrades.
