Domenicali admits tyre concern

NEWS STORY
25/03/2011

Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali remains concerned at the durability of the new Pirelli tyres, fearing that the increased number of pit stops will lead to chaos and could even prove dangerous.

While a number of drivers and team bosses and sections of the media, most notably Pitpass, have been critical of the excessive degradation the Pirellis are suffering, Domenicali has been remarkably quiet, until now.

"In the first race simulation in Barcelona, to achieve the best pace, we stopped four times," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "On Sunday, there will be at least three, because when the performance drops, it is useless to leave a driver on the track without pace.

"We suggested that tyres are made with greater degradation in respect to 2010 - with Bridgestone, you could almost drive a grand prix without stopping - but imagine the race here with so much traffic in the pits for 72 stops in 58 laps... I am concerned," he admitted.
