Britons told not to travel to Bahrain

On the day after what should have been the Bahrain GP weekend, the Foreign Office has warned British citizens not to go there amidst reports that Saudi forces are on the verge of entering the country.

Just one week after the FIA announced that a new deadline (May 1) has been set regarding a decision on whether the cancelled event will be rescheduled later in the year, the Foreign Office issued the following:

"We advise against all travel to Bahrain until further notice. Following an increase in protests over recent days, confrontations between protestors and police on Sunday 13 March, reports of protestors establishing roadblocks, and reports that the Saudi National Guard will enter Bahrain, we also advise British nationals currently in Bahrain to remain at home until further notice.

"The risk of further outbreaks of violence has increased. If British nationals do travel within Bahrain they should maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places an on major highways, and avoid large crowds and demonstrations. The airport remains open and transiting through the airport is unaffected by this advice."

King Abdullah recently warned the Bahraini authorities that if they did not settle the unrest in their country his forces would. Having effectively banned a day so-called Day of Rage in their own country at the weekend it now appears the Saudis will carry out their threat.
