Go Motorsport rewards Silverstone's unsung heroes

An army of more than 1,000 volunteers will be working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of this weekend's British Grand Prix. They will be giving up their time to perform a vast array of critical duties at Silverstone - roles include: track marshals, timekeepers, medical personnel and technical scrutineers.

All the volunteers for the event are co-ordinated by the Motor Sports Association (MSA), governing body of UK motor sport, which also provides one of the five official F1 stewards for this weekend's Grand Prix.

British volunteers and marshals are widely acknowledged as among the very best in the world and the MSA is one of just two governing bodies appointed as a Regional Training Provider by the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety and Sustainability - an accolade that reflects the quality of the training afforded to its membership.

To acknowledge and reward the sterling efforts of these internationally regarded volunteers, the MSA's Go Motorsport initiative has organised a series of special events including visits to two of the Formula One teams based in the UK.

Established by the MSA to encourage and assist newcomers into all areas of the sport whether as a competitor, trackside fan or volunteer, Go Motorsport and its GoMotorsport.net website provides all the information needed by anyone wanting to get closer to the sport.

As part of its activities to encourage more volunteers, Go Motorsport has set up money-can't-buy visits for F1 marshals to visit the state-of-the-art McLaren Technology Centre as well as to savour live grand prix Race Day Experiences at the Williams Conference Centre, kindly provided by Williams F1 partner RBS.

"Quite rightly the work of British marshals and officials is renowned right around the world," says Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive. "They provide a wide range of different skills and without them it's not only the British Grand Prix that wouldn't happen, but also the thousands of other motor sport events that take place across the country every year.

"That's why it's so important that their incredible efforts are fully understood, appreciated and rewarded whenever possible. The recent activities organised by Go Motorsport with McLaren and RBS have been extremely well received by those volunteers lucky enough to have been selected and we are hoping to set up many more similar events in the future."

Go Motorsport was launched two years ago with 2008 F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton at the McLaren Technology Centre and the initiative has attracted strong support from many of F1's most famous names. Current FIA Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, David Coulthard MBE, former Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill OBE, Sir Frank Williams and Murray Walker - plus a host of other high-profile personalities - are all official Go Motorsport Ambassadors.
