Button eyed Webber's seat

NEWS STORY

The Daily Telegraph claims that Jenson Button's representatives had talks with Red Bull management last summer with a view to the Englishman replacing Mark Webber this season.

The Englishman was on a one year deal with Brawn, however, as the season progressed and he headed towards the title it was widely assumed he would remain with the Brackley outfit.

However, it was once the season ended that things appeared to fall apart, with talk of fall-outs between the drivers and team managers over money and loyalty. While Button wished to remain with the team he appeared to be forced out, the backroom boys no doubt aware of the impending deal with Mercedes which in turn led to deals with Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

"We did receive an inquiry from Jenson's management last summer but we were, and still are, very happy with our two drivers," Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told the British newspaper.

While Button, who subsequently joined McLaren, currently leads the world championship, Webber - who some assumed would quit F1 at the end of the season - is fourth, having taken a supreme win in Barcelona last weekend.
