McLaren sports car factory gets planning permission

Woking Borough Council's Planning Committee has given planning permission for McLaren Automotive to go ahead with the construction of the McLaren Production Centre, the facility where the company will produce its new sports car.

Details of the McLaren Automotive project were announced in April when Ron Dennis stood down as Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Racing, handing the role to Martin Whitmarsh.

Confirmeing that permission has been granted, a McLaren spokeslan said: "We are delighted that the scheme attracted significant support from the key statutory consultees and from the Borough Council. Owing to the nature of the application, the decision will now be forwarded to the Secretary of State as required in such cases, prior to the anticipated issue of a consent notice from the local authority."

If all goes as planned, the launch date for the first model in the new range of McLaren sports cars will be in 2011.
