Ecclestone and Silverstone

NEWS STORY
05/05/2009

With the 2010 British GP at Donington looking ever more unlikely, sections of the British media remain confident that Bernie Ecclestone will have a change of heart and move the event back to Silverstone.

In addition to playing the 'tradition' and 'emotion' cards - neither of which have any place in contemporary F1 - some are pointing to the Concorde Agreement and the fact that it enshrines a number of 'classic' events including the British round of the World Championship.

However, ignoring the fact that the teams have yet to sign the new Concorde Agreement, one of the other 'protected' events is the French Grand Prix, which is missing from this year's calendar, while Belgium, yet another 'protected' event, has also been dropped in the past.

Ecclestone does not do changes of heart, certainly when it comes to Silverstone and its owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club.

Despite what BRDC President Damon Hill might say, despite clauses in un-signed Concorde Agreements, and in spite of 'warnings' from Government ministers who should have more important things to worry about, Ecclestone will not relent and hand the race back to the Northamptonshire track. In his opinion he's given the BRDC and Silverstone quite enough chances.

However, were he to be allowed to become the promoter of the event at Silverstone....
