Jerez test gets underway

NEWS STORY
16/09/2008

The final test of the 2008 season got underway at Jerez today, with just three teams on duty.

Since the last test here in July, parts of the track have been resurfaced, leading to fears last week that the test might be moved to Mugello as officials waited on FIA approval of the modifications.

Although the big guns continue to focus on this season and the run-in to the 2008 title(s), this week's test will also see teams trying out various components for next season, including 2009-spec aerodynamic components and the controversial KERS system.

Estonian Marco Asmer topped the timesheets for BMW, on what has been dubbed 'young driver day'.

The youngster worked on the basic set-up of the car in an attempt to improve his skills as a test driver. By completing 79 laps, Asmer stayed just inside the "350 kms mileage limit for young drivers.

Tomorrow Christian Klien will be at the wheel of the F1.08, while on Thursday and Friday Robert Kubica will take over.

Williams young driver was 19-year-old Spaniard Dani Clos, making his debut behind the wheel of an F1 car. Clos is currently contesting the F3 Euro Series.

Speaking at the conclusion of the day's programme, Williams Technical Director Sam Michael said: "After successful preliminary tests of the KERS flywheel today, the team will be undertaking more component testing tomorrow, part of which will include 2009 aero parts and rear wing."

Mike Conway was at the wheel of Honda's KERS development car. The Englishman completed just four runs totalling 20 laps in the morning session before a sensor wiring problem brought the day's running to an early conclusion. Alex Wurz takes over tomorrow, when five more teams are expected to begin their programmes.
