FIA to delay introduction of new rules

NEWS STORY
08/12/2006

The FIA has opted to delay, by one year, the introduction of a number of new rules aimed at increasing overtaking.

The measures included the introduction of the highly controversial Centreline Downwash Generating (CDG) rear wing, which since it was first announced has been described by many F1 insiders as the wrong solution.

At a meeting in September, the teams and the FIA agreed to "defer the introduction of new aerodynamic regulations" by one year to 2009, in order to "optimise new bodywork designs". Today's announcement officially confirms the agreement.

Now, the teams and the FIA will have to work together, though the announcement means that at least all parties can aim at one deadline. Previously, the CDG was due to be introduced in 2008, with energy recovery systems scheduled to make their F1 debut one year later.

Although some measures have been deferred until 2009, other proposals aimed at cutting costs, including the introduction of standard electronic control systems, will go ahead in 2008.
