Sepang Preview - Malaysia

NEWS STORY

A1 Team Malaysia is prepared to battle its A1GP World Cup of Motorsport rivals this weekend on home turf, with the fourth round of the Series taking place at the Sepang International Circuit, close to Kuala Lumpur.

The team has made a strong start to the season with two race victories in Brno, Czech Republic, proving that the team has the capability to win, and with driver, Alex Yoong, running in fifth until the final lap of the Feature race in Beijing, China, A1 Team Malaysia has the confidence and determination to continue with this front-running level of competitiveness in Sepang. Fairuz Fauzy will also be driving for the team over the weekend and his contribution is warmly welcomed.

Jack Cunningham, A1 Team Malaysia Chief Executive, says, "We've had some good results and been running strongly in all six races so far this season and as a team this is building our confidence and increasing our determination to keep pushing everyone for their best performance. Adding Fairuz to this equation with his participation is a great bonus for us. We're really pulling together and this team effort is bringing us the rewards we're looking for. We're fifth in the championship although it's early days and there's no reason why we can't move forward from here."

The pressures of representing his country do not daunt driver Yoong as he says, "Racing at our home circuit gives us an extra buzz. The tremendous support we're given may add to the pressure but it's a positive for us, it fires us all up, the adrenalin pumps and it really helps us – we all really enjoy the attention and focus on our team. My aim is to repeat our Brno performance – that's the ultimate, but it's a tall order, as the field of drivers is very strong, there are so many talented racers and, although we may have an edge with our level of track knowledge, racing is very unpredictable as we're all out there to win. I'll be racing for my country and that's of most importance."

Fauzy adds, "The cancellation of the Beijing Friday session limited my A1GP track experience to two laps this season, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to put in some real laps this weekend. Our strong teamwork is one of the forte's of A1 Team Malaysia and I'm proud to be part of this. I think we could take an early advantage if we use our sessions well, which can then set us up for a highly competitive weekend. One thing's for sure, we'll be out there doing our best for Malaysia."

A1 Team Malaysia scored an eighth place finish in the Sprint race and fifth place finish in the main Feature race at the Malaysian event last year. Fauzy and Yoong shared driving duties on that occasion.

All the team members will be busy this week with the crew setting up the pit garage and the drivers participating in a number of PR events including a visit to the Proton factory at Shah Alam with a number of other A1GP drivers, and a press conference on Thursday afternoon at Petronas Towers. Racing action starts on Friday with the Sprint and Feature races taking place on Sunday.
