Renault's dilemma

NEWS STORY
18/09/2006

Testing at Jerez last Thursday, Renault suffered two engine failures, just days after Fernando Alonso's powerplant spectacularly detonated on the main straight at Monza, much to the delight of the partisan crowd.

The Renault failures follow two experienced by Honda, as the teams look ahead and the need to homologate engines for 2007.

As the manufacturers push ever harder, in an attempt to have the most powerful, yet reliable, unit in time for the Japan deadline, there is the risk that this will compromise their 2006 ambitions.

For Honda, safe in fourth position in the Constructors' Championship, this might not be too much of a worry, however, for Renault, which is still defending both titles, the situation presents a worrying dilemma.
