Monaco's Prince Rainier dies

NEWS STORY
06/04/2005

Monaco's Prince Rainier has died aged 81.

Pitpass previously reported that the Prince, who has ruled the principality since 1949, was gravely ill, suffering from heart, kidney and lung problems. He finally passed away on Wednesday morning, his son Prince Albert by his side.

It is highly doubtful that this will affect the running of the Grand Prix, which is sure to go ahead as planned next month.

However, the whole event, and certainly the podium celebrations are certain to be subdued.

Realistically, Monaco is the highlight of the season for the sponsors and just about everyone else that keeps the F1 'roadshow' running, more deals are made over that particular race weekend than any other.

Although F1 may well show its sympathetic face at times - such as on Sunday, when the Ferraris ran with black noses as a mark of respect for the Pope - it is still a hard-nosed business, and though there will be armbands and tributes aplenty next month, the race - and the deals - will go ahead as planned.
