Problems for Mexico

NEWS STORY
10/02/2005

Despite having signed a five-year deal to host a round of the Formula One World Championship from 2006, organizers of the Mexican Grand Prix are working around the clock in order to save the event.

It's understood that the deal was signed before all the relevant planning permission had been granted, leaving the event in limbo, with work on the $100m track yet to begin.

Now, officials are racing against time to resolve the situation, with Dario Flota Ocampo, secretary of state for tourism claiming that if the situation is not resolved within the next 15 days the 2006 race will be scrapped.

"If we do not manage to have the grounds by this date, the Grand Prix in 2006 will not be able to be held here because we will not have time," said Ocampo, according to AFP.

Hermann Tilke was due to design the track.

So it's not all bad news.
