Montoya, joyously politically-incorrect

NEWS STORY

Never known for not speaking his mind, Juan Pablo Montoya has admitted that he has not called his teammate Ralf Schumacher, currently recovering from his accident in the United States GP, to wish him a speedy recovery.

"No, I haven't telephoned him since the accident," the fiery Colombian told The Times. "I don't have his number. I have no plans to find out his number. I'll probably get someone to send him a message saying I hope he gets well. What am I going to say if I call him? Did it hurt?"

Before one draws the conclusion that Montoya still loathes his German teammate, who is also deserting WillliamsF1 at the end of the season, he adds, "Actually, I was getting on quite well with him this year.

"We're not friends, but we get on," he added. "Actually, Rubens is my best friend in F1. I first met him when he raced against my father in 1985. He's a great guy. With Ralf, we're not friends because we don't have anything in common. I couldn't sit down in a restaurant and talk to him.

"It's like telephoning him. What am I going to say? It's a shame the car is quick and I'm going to win races and you're not? I do feel sorry for him and I do enjoy racing against him. But that's about it."

The joyously politically-incorrect Colombian also gave his view on the performance of his team this season: Williams haven't got their act together. I was expecting a lot more of them this season. It always takes too long to be competitive and they know that. This year they're farther away from the title than last year. I think Frank is concerned that this is the longest period in his team's history without a title - eight years - but he's working his arse off. Everyone is. This year has been especially bad. They know that."

And of his own performance?

"From my point of view, I think I've done a really good job," he says. "Frank thinks the same. He's the most important person for me. I don't always care what others think. If they have a comment, I listen and then decide if I want to accept it or not. I listen to Frank. He always makes very positive comments."
