Ecclestone seeking change to points system

NEWS STORY
12/03/2007

Since the last overhaul of the points system - carried out at the end of the 2002 season in an attempt to prevent the Ferrari steamroller (it failed) - race fans and drivers have complained that the gap between first and second doesn't suitably reward the winner, and almost encourages drivers to settle for second place.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Bernie Ecclestone is seeking to change the points system in time for the 2008 World Championship. The Englishman is proposing that the (points) gap between first and second should be greater.

"With second place getting eight points it is not right that the winner takes only ten," he is quoted as saying. "For 2008 I will propose a change."

Controversially, Ecclestone is also proposing that the (Drivers') World Championship should be based on race wins as opposed to points: "It would be simple," he claims, "the guy who wins more should be the champion."
