A new record for Formula One?

NEWS STORY
05/03/2007

Hopefully, just hopefully someone is taking the Mickey, because we'd hate to think that this is serious. Then again, this is the Daily Telegraph we're talking about, a broadsheet not exactly known for its whacky sense of fun.

In a competition for the "acclaimed" Championship Edition of the new Playstation 3 game, the Daily Telegraph uses the ubiquitous TM (Trademark symbol) 10 times in an article comprising just over 330 words - and that includes the rules and address to which entries should be sent.

Just in case anyone has missed the numerous TM symbols, there is a separate display box which ensures that there can be no confusion as to who owns Formula One, Formula 1, F1, FIA Formula One World Championship, Grand Prix... and translations thereof.

With a name like "TM Competition" we assume that the DT is taking the p***, however, most worrying is that there is a TM symbol against Bernie Ecclestone's name.

Surely the F1 supremo hasn't gone the whole hog and trademarked his moniker. If he has this is bad news for all Bernards, Ecclestones and particularly Bernard Ecclestones. Has he copyrighted the entire name or the individual letter that constitute it... we should be told.

A few years back there were a number of different F1 simulation games, most notably Geoff Crammond's however all these bit the dust not due to lack of interest from fans, but due to the demands, and not merely financial, of the powers that be.

We won't give you the answer to the competition because we assume that even your great-great-great grandmother will get that correct, however, here's our suggestion for the tiebreaker.

"F1™ is still brilliant because...'' Despite corporate crap such as this, the sport still inspires, still evokes a passion that few others could even contemplate.
