Official: Tyres will be marked for easy identification

By checking the FIA website and clicking on the link marked 2007 Sporting Regulations - document update: 05.03.2007, Pitpass has learned that the outer sidewall of all tyres which are to be used at an event this season must be marked with a unique identification.

The move, which has been discussed for many months, is aimed at helping race fans understand what compound teams are running at any stage of the race, and thereby help them evaluate teams' different strategies.

With just over a week before the 2007 season gets underway, the Formula One Commission and the FIA's World Motor Sport Council has finally reached an agreement, hence the new rule: "Each tyre supplier must undertake to provide no more than two specifications of dry-weather tyre at each event, each of which must be of one homogenous compound and visibly distinguishable from one another when a car is on the track".

Elsewhere, the revised regulations state: "The outer sidewall of all tyres which are to be used at an event must be marked with a unique identification".

Talking to Pitpass, a Bridgestone spokeswoman confirmed that a basic marking system will be used in order to distinguish one specification tyre from another, though she was unable to say at this stage precisely how the tyres will be marked. That said, she denied that F1 will follow the example set by ChampCar and 'paint' the entire tyrewall red.

"Although introduced at very short notice, Bridgestone welcomes the making of the tyre specifications visibly distinguishable from each other as it will now enable the media and public to further understand the strategies employed by the various teams and therefore potentially increase their enjoyment of each race," she said.

Bridgestone is still assessing the best method for marking the tyres but it is expected to be placed on the Option tyre of the two specifications. This will add to the work of Bridgestone's tyre fitting staff but we anticipate dealing with this swiftly and efficiently."
