Now, now Damon

13/01/2005

Talking to Autosport magazine, 1996 world champion Damon Hill suggests that his former WilliamsF1 teammate David Coulthard made a fundamental mistake at Jerez 1997, when he obeyed team orders and allowed his McLaren teammate Mika Hakkinen through to take the victory.

Ironically, at the next race, the 1998 Australian Grand Prix, Coulthard once again pulled aside for Hakkinen, this time as a result of a "personal agreement".

Referring to the Jerez 'incident', Hill believes that this is where it all went wrong for Coulthard, who having followed orders sent out the wrong signal to his employers, and effectively became support act to Hakkinen and then Raikkonen.

"If you are really dissecting DC's career, what he should have done is won in Jerez," says the Englishman.

"When Ron got on the radio and said: 'Can you move over for my boy Mika', he should have said: ''F*** you, you t**t'."

Clearly Damon has forgotten Spa 1998, when Ralf Schumacher - who was rapidly gaining on teammate Hill, who was leading the race, following the surprise elimination of Michael Schumacher, and about to take the lead from his Jordan teammate, was told repeatedly by his employer, Eddie Jordan, to let Hill win, which he duly did.
