Monaco targets Top 5 finish

A1 Team Monaco has set its sights on a top five finish at the Kyalami circuit in Gauteng, South Africa, host to round five of the 2008/9 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.

The internationally FIA graded Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit is situated 24 kilometres north of central Johannesburg in the province of Gauteng. The word Kyalami means 'my home' in Zulu, one of South Africa's 11 national languages.

The 4.26 kilometres (2.65 miles) long track, with 11 turns and driven in an anti-clockwise direction for the A1 GP weekend, was built in 1961 and has established itself as a world class circuit that has played host to numerous world premier motorsport events, including Formula One, MotoGP and World Super Bikes. Today the circuit hosts 10 National motorsport events with international meetings planned for 2009 and beyond. This will be the first time the A1GP series visits the 'home of South African motorsport'.

The current circuit layout was built in 1991, with only one minor addition since; the building of a chicane at the penultimate corner (turn 10). It also features the intimidating downhill section known as The Mineshaft that links turns 7 and 8. The lap ends with a slow left-hander (turn 11) that leads on to the short pit straight and across the start/finish line before diving into the fast turns 1 and 2.

The fastest recorded race lap on the current circuit is 1:34.776 set in 1998 in a Sports Racing World Cup event. The fastest single seater race lap on the current circuit was set at the GP Masters event in 2005 by Nigel Mansell (Reynard) with a time of 1:36.390.

Clivio Piccione, Driver and Seat-Holder, A1 Team Monaco: ""I am really looking forward to the next round as we believe we have found the cause of the problems we experienced at the last few races. We want to put our poor results behind us and start a fresh in South Africa. I have been training extremely hard for the last two weeks and am even more focused for this race than ever as I really want to do well. The team has been doing a great job in the pitstops; we were in the top five in Taupo, so we are geared up for an overall improvement in Kyalami in terms of performance. I am excited about visiting another new track. Kyalami has an impressive motorsport heritage and from what I have seen of it it is a fast, demanding track with a few high speed corners. I cannot wait to get back in to the car and take up from where we started in New Zealand. Top five is our target once again."

Graham Taylor, Team Principal, A1 Team Monaco: "There was a mixture of emotions following the previous race with a poor Saturday performance frustrating the Team. We completely understand our errors and therefore feel that we can take a performance step forward in Kyalami. Once again, Team Monaco will benefit from participation in the Rookie session and can build on the information gained to really start the weekend properly."
