Laguna Seca Preview: Team New Zealand

NEWS STORY
09/03/2006

The condition of the Laguna Seca circuit for this weekend's 10th Round of the A1 Grand Prix series doesn't worry New Zealand driver Matt Halliday at all.

The track has been pelted by so much Californian rain in recent weeks that many of the run-off areas have practically been washed away, causing organisers to consider canceling the meeting because of fears for driver safety.

But Halliday is certain the circuit will be tidied up in time for Friday's first official practice and he isn't fazed by the odd run-off area not being 100%.

"For starters, you always plan to keep the car on the track!" Halliday said. "Secondly, the drivers and A1 officials have built up plenty of trust during this inaugural season and we have faith in them to act in our best interests.

"Besides, it's pointless being threatened and distracted by run off areas when there are plenty of on-track activity to be concentrating on."

During the previous two rounds Black Beauty has been involved in three separate collisions that have banged up the car, two of them major shunts from behind.

"It's like I'm driving around with a bulls-eye target on my rear end!" Halliday said.

"We've been devoid of luck at times during this campaign and it's easy to be frustrated, especially when it's outside of your control.

"But we can't afford to get wound up because it happens all the time in motorsport and there's nothing you can do except keep pushing hard and focusing on the goal – the top of that podium."

Halliday did not race in New Zealand following his eventful A1 meeting in Mexico where he nursed a battered car home in eighth place for three valuable championship points.

He has been concentrating on being fit and fresh and is looking forward to reacquainting himself with the Laguna Seca circuit he roared around while competing in Indy Lights back in 2001.

"It is a great place to race," he said. "It is spectacular looking, but its unique location on a sandy hill does create problems for the drivers because the track can be changeable, sandy and gritty in parts and low grip in other areas.

"It's also quite a technical circuit for both driver and engineer to get the maximum from the car, so it will be a challenging round.

"Our major sponsor, Fisher & Paykel, have quite a contingent at the race and I suspect it is going to be one of those weekends when their support is welcomed and appreciated by everyone in the team."
