And in Singapore

05/12/2012

There has been a lot of excitement regarding a proposed purpose built F1 track in Singapore, sadly, that isn't quite what is planned.

Billionaire Peter Lim is planning a race track however, contrary to reports elsewhere it is FIA compliant and not F1 compliant. Big difference.

Furthermore, the joint venture, which involves Lim's Fastrack Autosports Pte Ltd and Malaysia's UEM Land Bhd, is for an "integrated motorsports hub" in Iskandar, which is actually in southern Malaysia.

According to UEM, the development, which it is estimated will cost $1.26bn, and is described as a "motorsport city" will include car showrooms, automotive retail, workshops, a test track and go-kart track.

According to Pitpass sources, the race circuit will be an FIA-certified grade 2 track which can be used for MotoGP but not F1.

While Singapore has formed part of the calendar since 2008, Malaysia has been a regular since 1999. After just a few years, Singapore, the first-ever F1 night race, is already proving popular whilst the event at Sepang is often played out, much like Shanghai, in front of empty grandstands.
