Webber looks to strategy

28/07/2012

Mat Coch writes:

Mark Webber failed to cash in on the full potential of his Red Bull during qualifying today, being bundled out during the second phase. It was a disappointing end for the Australian who believes he could have done better.

"We had the speed," he said after qualifying. "I was relatively strong in Q1, not too bad at the start of Q2 on the scrubbed tyre and then on the last set I didn't get the rhythm or the grip on the first lap. When you've got to go again on the second lap it very rarely works.

"We paid a big penalty for not getting the last run correct. We were three-tenths between third place and eleventh."

By not making the final phase of qualifying Webber is free to choose which tyre to start tomorrow's race on. With overtaking around the tight Hungaroring circuit notoriously difficult, the Red Bull driver will be looking to a strong strategy as well as race pace to move forward.

"If the racing is helping on track then we can do a good job if the car is good," he explained, "but strategy is where we need to maximise everything; whether there's passing on the track or in the pit lane, whatever."
