No show US F1 could face FIA sanctions

11/03/2010

Following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Bahrain, the FIA has warned that US F1 could face sanctions following its failure to make it to the grid this season.

In a statement issued following today's meeting, the FIA said: "With regard to the US F1 team's non-participation in the 2010 championship, the world council mandated the FIA president, in full compliance with the new code of practice for disciplinary matters, to take forward the most appropriate action."

When asked what this might mean an FIA spokesman was unable to elaborate.

Despite being in existence since February 2009, and being one of three teams officially given a 2010 grid slot by the FIA just a few months later, the American bid to enter the sport descended into outright farce, with the North Carolina outfit initially asking to miss the first three races of the season then asking to have its entry deferred until 2011.

The World Motor Sport Council has also approved a new selection process for a possible 13th team next season and a reserve (14th) team.
